Aquaculture

  • Productivity and Efficiency

According to the World Resources Institute, aquaculture—or fish farming—has grown rapidly to meet world fish demand, more than doubling production between 2000 and 2012. New research shows that aquaculture production will need to more than double again between now and 2050 to meet the demands of a growing population. Resources available in this sub-theme include aquaculture development strategies, country-wide aquaculture project reports, and institutional practices for aquaculture strengthening, among other resources that support improving aquaculture globally.

Development of Color Pattern in Pond - Reared Young of Five Micropterus Species of Southeastern Us

Published:
January 1, 1971
U.S. Agency for International Development
Six stocks of Southeastern Micropterus were spawned in earthen ponds, including wild-caught adults of M. coosae (Alabama and Apalachicola races), M. p. punctulatus, M. punctulatus henshalli, and M. notius, and hatchery stock of M. dolomieui. Fry were reared in earthen ponds provided with Pimephales...Read more

Fish Behavior and Its Use in the Capture and Culture of Fishes

Published:
January 1, 1971
U.S. Agency for International Development
The commercial aquaculture or fish farm shows great promise as a source of low cost, high quality protein. However, as few reliable data on costs and returns to the industry exist, before investment decisions are made, certain critical factors such as water quality, species selection, and...Read more

Effect of Vitamin Fortification in Auburn No. 2 Fish Feed

Published:
January 1, 1971
U.S. Agency for International Development
Vitamin fortification of the Auburn No. 2 pelleted fish feed increased net production of channel catfish an average of 19.3 percent in feeding test conducted in replicated earthen ponds between April 13 and November 9, 1970. A stocking density of 4,000 fingerlings acre was used and the fish were...Read more

Phosphorus Dynamics in Ponds

Published:
January 1, 1971
U.S. Agency for International Development
Phosphorus is generally recognized as a key nutrient in the fertility of fish ponds. This nutrient frequently limits plant production and ultimately influences fish production. Conversely, too much phosphorus is sometimes responsible for excessive production of blue-green algae or other nuisance...Read more

Limnological Role of Aquatic Macrophytes and Their Relationship to Reservoir Management

Published:
January 1, 1971
U.S. Agency for International Development
Reservoir biologists often consider aquatic macrophytes an undesirable form of primary production. Techniques for controlling macrophytes have limited effectiveness. A consideration of recent research indicates that a balance between phytoplankton and macrophyte production is desirable in most...Read more

Digestibility of Nutrients in Semi-Purified Rations By Channel Catfish in Stainless Steel Troughs

Published:
January 1, 1971
U.S. Agency for International Development
The digestibility of nutrients in six semi-purified rations containing variable levels of protein, cellulose and starch by channel catfish in troughs was evaluated by using chromium oxide as an inert reference in the feeds. Excreta were collected using an indirect trough collection method and a...Read more

Vascular Aquatic Plants for Mineral Nutrient Removal from Polluted Waters

Published:
March 1, 1970
U.S. Agency for International Development
Aquatic plants have potential as feedstuffs in certain nations, but the economics of harvesting and processing would prohibit their direct utilization as a forage in technologically advanced nations. However, nutrient pollution is accelerating rates of eutrophication of natural waters in many areas...Read more
