The general objective of this research is to increase food production in the arid and sub-humid lands of the less developed countries through the improvement of water management practices and the integration of those with other good management practices in the semi-arid lands of the Latin American region but will be applicable in principal to similar conditions of other regions. This improvement of water management practices is necessary to obtain maximum economic returns from limited water resources and such inputs as improved seeds, increased use of fertilizers and pesticides, and supporting institutional structure.
