Grant is provided under the PVO Co-Financing Project to Plan International for a follow-on project to develop community-based water organizations at 120 borehole sites in Kenya. The 120 boreholes were drilled by PLAN during Phase I. to develop community water organizations that are capable of maintaining and sustaining the boreholes, PLAN will focus on engendering: community organization skills; awareness of the health-related benefits of borehole water; gender awareness; and skills in community organization, project management, basic financial management, and hand pump maintenance and repair. By the end of the project, all 120 boreholes will be operating regularly, with full user financial support. There will be 120 officially registered borehole committees, each with a bank savings account to ensure the security of group contributions; on average, 7 of 11 members per committee will be women, and at least 3 members will trained in hand pump maintenance. All sites will be fenced and include proper drainage facilities.
