This study looks at future orientation among the small-scale fishermen of the northwest coast of Costa Rica. An important component to be considered in any situation of proposed techno-economic change is the temporal perspective of the population involved. It is clear that participation in change programs will be enhanced if the participants are oriented toward the future as opposed to the present or the past.
