Guides to the design of water treatment plants. The design of water works involves the consideration of many engineering details in the light of specific local conditions. Details of design, therefore, cannot be standardized in any fixed pattern which would eliminate the necessity for the engineer to exercise professional judgment in appraising local conditions and in determining what structures and equipment will best meet these conditions. This does not mean, however, that each engineer can function independently, without due regard to opinions, attitudes and practices of other engineers. There is need, therefore, for group action to blend different viewpoints and attitudes so as to eliminate extremes and idiosyncrasies. Such a group action is most productive when it is directed to the formulation of standards of professional practice.
