This report constitutes the final evaluation of the USAID-financed rural piped water project in Malawi. The Government of Malawi (GOM) began developing a self-help rural water supply program in 1969. In 1980, USAID agreed to support the program with a $6million grant over a five-year period (subsequently extended to December 1988). The main purposes of this final evaluation, as given in the original Project Paper (USAID, 1980), are to assess the health and social impacts of the project and to measure the extent to which the project provides safe water to the rural population of Malawi.
