This technical report describes a success story in reservoir aquaculture and fisheries research and development in the Saguling and Cirata Reservoirs in West Java, Indonesia. The project was undertaken on behalf of farmers and fishermen displaced by the reservoir development and involved fruitful cooperation among the Indonesian State Electric Company, the Institute of Ecology of Padjadjaran University, Bandung, the West Java Provincial Fisheries Agency and its Technical Management Unit for Saguling and Cirata, and the International Center for Living Aquatic Resources Management (ICLARM), with the farsighted support of the World Bank. The report consists of a background paper on the project followed by 11 technical papers on the following subjects: (1) population density and socioeconomic conditions around the two project reservoirs; (2) the suitability of the reservoirs' water quality for developing floating net cage aquaculture; (3) research on cage aquaculture in Saguling Reservoir; (4) economics of floating net cage common carp culture in Saguling; (5) marketing of common carp from Saguling; (6) waste production and efficiency of feed use in floating net cages in a eutrophic tropical reservoir; (7) techniques to improve hatchery and nursery production of common carp; (8) fisheries management in Saguling; (9) biotechnical feasibility studies on the importation of Clupeichthys aesarnensis Wongratana, 1983 to Saguling; (10) extension of traditional postharvest fish processing techniques; and (11) integrated environmental management in Saguling.
