Blue carbon projects aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and avert the worst effects of climate change by storing carbon in ocean-based environmental restoration projects like seaweed farms. The USGS Blue Carbon (vegetated coastal ecosystems) Projects work with partner organizations to collect, analyze, and synthesize data in order to improve estimates of coastal wetland carbon fluxes. Some site-specific research locations are listed. Targeted efforts at these sites will help improve science and data availability on ecosystem-specific emission factors and sequestration rates, effects of activities (e.g. land management actions), and effects of, and response to, sea level rise throughout the United States.
