Water Supply and Scarcity
According to the United Nations, water scarcity is defined as the point at which the aggregate impact of all users impinges on the supply or quality of water. Water scarcity is a relative concept and can occur at any level of supply or demand. Scarcity may be socially-constructed or the consequence of altered supply patterns stemming from climate change. Resources available in this sub-theme include U.S. drought monitoring data, workshops for rural water supply systems, among other resources that support water supply and scarcity.

Water Supply and Scarcity Resources
Estimation of Irrigation Requirement for Venezuela
Published:
January 1, 1972U.S. Agency for International Development
Christiansen's formula was used to compute evaporation and potential evapotranspiration using 1013 months of data from 19 stations in Venezuela. Thirteen probability levels of precipitation were determined for each station. Potential irrigation requirements for 16 stations were computed based...Read more

Published:
January 1, 1972U.S. Agency for International Development
With increasing demands for development and for greater agricultural production, improved methodology in planning becomes more important. This paper proposes concepts that further define both needs for moisture and its availability.Read more
Irrigation Requirements in Latin American Countries
Published:
January 1, 1972U.S. Agency for International Development
A study on irrigation requirements in Latin American Countries. With increasing needs for the developments of their natural resources, many Latin American countries are placing increased emphasis upon irrigation and the evaluation of the availability of moisture requirements for agricultural...Read more

Latin America and the CaribbeanIrrigation Requirements for Turf
Published:
January 1, 1972U.S. Agency for International Development
There is much over irrigation of turf. Some is unavoidable but significant savings of water can be had from a better understanding of the principles of scheduling irrigation. Irrigation scheduling is greatly facilitated by uniformity of soil depth and moisture storage capacity. This paper describes...Read more
Techniques for Assessing Water Resource Potentials in the Developing Countries With Emphasis on Stream flow, Erosion and Sediment Transport, Water Movement in Unsaturated Soils, Ground Water, and Remote Sensing in Hydrologic Applications
Published:
December 1, 1971U.S. Agency for International Development
Hydrologic instrumentation and methodology for assessing water-resource potentials have originated largely in the developed countries of the temperate zone. The developing lie largely in the tropic zone, which contains the countries full gamut of the earth's climatic environments,...Read more
Problem of Water Scheduling in West Pakistan, Research Studies and Needs
Published:
November 1, 1971U.S. Agency for International DevelopmentColorado State University
The capacity to build and maintain the irrigation system has exceeded the capacity to manage the allocation of water for maximum agricultural production. The irrigation system was not designed to supply total crop water needs plus leaching requirements, but rather to provide sufficient water during...Read more

Published:
August 1, 1971U.S. Agency for International DevelopmentColorado State University
In order to increase the water delivery efficiency of an existing irrigation system, it is proposed that modern mathematical optimization techniques be applied to the management of irrigation water delivery. A deterministic mathematical model is developed to simulate the events that occur in...Read more
Irrigation Requirements and Climatic Evaluations for Venezuela
Published:
January 1, 1971U.S. Agency for International Development
A study on irrigation requirements and climatic evaluations for Venezuela. With increasing agricultural and natural resource development in Venezuela there is a correspondingly greater need for evaluating irrigation requirements for use in planning, design and in project operations and for a better...Read more

Latin America and the CaribbeanWater Management Research in Arid and Sub-Humid Lands of Less Developed Countries; Annual Progress Report
Published:
January 1, 1971U.S. Agency for International Development
The general objective of this research is to increase food production in the arid and sub-humid lands of the less developed countries through the improvement of water management practices and the integration of those with other good management and cultural procedures. This specific research was...Read more

Latin America and the CaribbeanAnalysis of Ephemeral Flow in Arid lands
Published:
January 1, 1971U.S. Agency for International Development
Ephemeral flow in arid lands in characterized by alternating random periods of wetness and dryness. Sustained flow occurs only in those aridland watersheds fed by snowmelt, large aquifers, reclaimed waste waters, or during sustained periods of rainfall. Stochastic analysis of flows focuses on...Read more
