Covid-19 has had persistent, wide-ranging impacts on small community water systems. Small community water systems (SCWS) serve millions around the United States in urban, rural, and growing communities. The pandemic poses serious challenges to the operational capacity and financial stability of many SCWS’s. Necessary increases in staffing and decontamination efforts pose great challenges to small water system’s monetary feasibilities. Growing operational budgets with Covid-19 related expenditures and decreases in revenues from the economic downturn have led to many water providers to increase their debt expenses with unstable repayment plans, potentially leading to the downfall of many small water systems.
