Since the mid-1960's, a number of papers have been published on the subject of deriving optimal release policies for multiple purpose reservoirs. Stochastic mathematical programming models are necessary due to the complexity of the problem. A reuse not only affect the present benefits derived from the reservoir but also from future releases. Furthermore, how the release affects future benefits is dependent on future inflows which are unknown.
