The environmental justice movement advocates for a correction to the racist and classist systems that channel environmentally harmful activities into marginalized communities. Although it has recently gained momentum, the environmental justice movement has existed for nearly 40 years. Many Black and brown organizers and working-class activists have led long fights to rid their communities of strategically placed operations that pollute the air, dirty the water, and endanger human health and safety. These organizers have gotten little credit for their work, even though many activists have been some of the most effective agents for change in their homes, workplaces, and communities.
